Se estrenó formato, con una impresionante nómina de ocho jugadores, dos grupos en la fase previa y eliminatorias a un sólo juego por el sistema Armageddon – menos tiempo para las negras, a las que en compensación les valen las tablas para triunfar –.
Por la mañana, poco antes del mediodía, se empezaron a disputar los grupos, que concluyeron a primera hora de la tarde. El ritmo de juego era de quince minutos a caída de bandera con una bonificación de quince segundos por jugada – modalidad Fischer –. Las victorias daban tres puntos y los empates uno a cada contendiente.
El grupo A concluyó así: Marcos Llaneza (MI, 2479) 7 puntos, Aitor Alonso (2235) 4, Enrique Álvarez (MF, 2368) y Enrique Aparicio (2110) 3. Pasaron a semifinales Marcos, uno de los favoritos, y un inspirado Aitor, que se sobrepuso a su derrota inicial frente a Aparicio.

Llegaba la esperadísima final entre ambos, grandes especialistas en esta disciplina de “ajedrez sin piezas”, cada uno de ellos acumulaba cuatro triunfos absolutos en el “Pablo Morán”, no se podía pedir más y todo podía suceder. “Tomatillo”, como se conoce a Iván en el mundo del ajedrez, se decantó por jugar con negras y se impuso, “al contraataque” con bastante comodidad valiéndose de una defensa francesa que Llaneza no acertó a franquear. Quinto título para un Iván González que vio más que nadie en esta magistral competición a la ciega organizada por el club CTD Ciudad Naranco.
